Costa Rica Ecosystem Approach

EE Philosophy

Development strategy that makes humanity the dynamic core of its environment and the fundamental descision making axis. It integrates economic, ecological, cultural and social variables in a multi-disciplinary criterion, in a greographic area outlined by ecological borders".

Proactive Intervention Strategy:

The "Palmas Pacifica" project is a responsible response to the environment and the contextual community, as it was developed based on a highly sustainable intervention strategy. This is the so-called Ecosystem Approach (hereinafter the EE for its Spanish acronym).

The EA is a development strategy that makes humanity the dynamic core of its environment and the fundamental decision making axis. It integrates economic, ecological, cultural and social variables in a multi-disciplinary criterion, in a georgraphic area outlined by ecological borders.

Moreover, as a proactive, integrated land, water and living resource management strategy, it fosters a balance between conservation and sustainable use. (Andrade 2007).

This strategy encompasses a set of methods to examine ecosystem structures and functions and how they respond to the actions and permanence of man therein. The ecosystem is seen as the articulation between the natural and the socio-cultural systems, with inter-related and interacting components.

This Approach is relevant for the preliminary design and the construction and operation of the "Palmas Pacifica" residential Project as it seeks to highlight its adaptive management instead of absolute preservation, as is the case in other conventional approaches.
